No, this is NOT a very late April Fool's post. The legions who have been attempting to preserve and sustain the character, attraction, and "living" aspects of steam locomotion have been facing challenge after challenge in the past decades: a diminishing of the knowledge necessary to keep steam running; increasing opposition to or expense in the use of coal, oil, or whatever fuels to fire them; and increasing droughts making even oil-fired steam a dangerous proposition (if not in actual risk, in appearances). Now a commercial tourist rail operation in Britain--a country with critical drought and fire problems this year--has introduced an answer most of us would have considered a joke a decade ago: Quote: Ride a Groundbreaking New Locomotive at Audley End Enchanted Railway ![]() Families visiting Audley End Enchanted Railway this summer will have the chance to experience something truly unique. Launching on Saturday 11 July 2026, our brand-new electric steam-outline locomotive represents a remarkable feat of engineering, innovation and railway heritage. Designed specifically for Audley End Enchanted Railway and built over nine months by The Steam Workshop, the impressive new locomotive combines the look, sound and excitement of a traditional steam engine with modern electric technology. What makes this locomotive truly special is its pioneering steam-effects system. Developed using innovative technology, it recreates the sights, atmosphere and spectacle of a traditional steam locomotive in a way unlike anything currently operating elsewhere. The result is a brand-new railway experience that captures all the magic of a miniature steam railway while embracing modern engineering. The Audley End Railway is a 10 1/4" gauge miniature railway 1.5 miles in length, operating through what has since its construction in 1963-64 been a modest "theme park" on part of the grounds of a rural palatial mansion and estate between London and Cambridge. It operates five steam locomotives, a diesel-hydraulic loco, and a petrol-mechanical loco--and now this unique "hybrid": Quote: At first glance, the locomotive looks like a traditional miniature steam engine. It has been carefully designed to recreate the sights, sounds and atmosphere of a classic railway journey. Visitors can enjoy:
However, unlike traditional steam locomotives, this remarkable engine is powered entirely by electricity. What truly sets it apart is its innovative steam-effects system. The technology behind the effects has been developed to recreate the theatre and spectacle of steam travel in a way that is unlike anything currently operating elsewhere. Now I'm wondering if this is what the Colebrookdale RailRoad meant by announcing three weeks ago that they were going to make 5288 be "zero emissions." |

Actually, the Swiss did zero emissions steam during WWII, converting a handful of small steam locomotives to take electricity from the catenary to power heating coils that provided the heat for steam generation. It was pretty strange, but it did work. |

In my opinion, that's preferable to the small industrial diesel or gas engines with which many steam outline amusment park locos have had fitted. |

Read Closely: "electric steam-outline locomotive" Steam Outline. It's an electric park train with nice special FX. Quote: What truly sets it apart is its innovative steam-effects system. Nice but nothing ground breaking and it's not steam. Chance has been doing electric CP Huntington's for years now. This new one just has better fake steam. Nobody is doing battery powered steam and unless something drastically changes in battery tech, nobody ever will. There's too much energy loss, the batteries would have to be massive. https://www.chancerides.com/electric_cp ... ton_train/ |
