It was posted on Facebook that this unit is land locked. The price seems optimistic.

This is the former US Air Force Baldwin S12 #1863, which was left behind when Loring AFB in extreme northeastern Maine was sold off as a "commerce center."

On the plus side, military locos usually have a good record of excellent maintenance. On the minus side, this is literally as far off the major railroad network as you can get. It would have to be trucked out to Presque Isle just to reach live rail, or better yet keep going to Brownville Junction, Mattawamkeag, or Bangor.

I would agree.

After I put this up, I noticed I forgot to include.

Then I couldn't get in.

Then I gave up on website not responding and had to deal with minor crisis.

Nate's correct, it was the 1863.

The pricing seems a little high to me as well, in comparison to EMD's with higher HP and better parts availablity.

One of the other military S-12's (1861/2?) went for sale a few years ago and I think it ended up not getting any offers and was scrapped.

Ozark Mountain Railcar was even taking to the comments to clarify that the seller sets the price, not OMR.

AKA somebody didn't do their research.

No matter what, it'll have to be trucked due to the bearings. I think 1863 and 1864 were replacements for our 8050 which I believe finished its military career at Loring.

Sister locomotive USAF 1864 was at Hill AFB in Ogden, UT, one of two locomotives on the base railway, the other being a GE 80-ton numbered 1606. I saw it there during a visit in November 1999 and the crew fired it up for me. It seemed to run fine.

Later the base railway closed and the 1864, costing too much for any tourist railroad to afford, was scrapped in place. See:

Note: The base railway was a separate operation from the Army's rail shop, a tenant activity formally known as the Defense Non-Tactical Generator and Rail Equipment Center (DGRC), which relocated to Anniston Army Depot, AL. See:

The old shop at Hill AFB was demolished and the site wiped clean. The track was pulled up, as was the track leading to the base itself. The most recent Google Earth images show that the site of the rail shop has been completely erased and part of I-15, Veterans Memorial Parkway, runs through where there shop once stood.

Whoever owns it has no idea what it is. The only chance they have of it being sold is to get it off ozark when the contract is up and offer it for scrap value. There’s a chance sms would be interested if that were to happen.

OMR doesn't set the price. The owner/client does. Nothin' says ya can't make an offer, though. Consider scrap value and transportation....

The owner is asking for half of the listed price. Omr doubles the asking price when listing equipment from what i hear.

Not true. I've listed equipment through OMR. They take a commission out of your asking price.
