I just found out that Gordon S. Crowell of Hilton Head, SC passed away in May, 2024 and I have never seen anything about it here or anywhere else. He was a WW2 vet, and electrical engineer with GE and a unbelieveably prolific and proficient photographer. In 1953 after graduating from U CAL in Berkley, he took several months befrore reporting to work for GE in Rochester, NY to recreate Lucius Beebe's journey (using information from Beebe himself who he knew) that resulted in Mixed Train Daily. Gordon shot hundreds of photos on this trip, both color and B&W, using long rolls of film in cannisters, which he processed every night in his hotel rooms, and reloaded for the next day. True to his engineering background, he placed a color wheel and photographed it first before making color photographs at any loction, and this proved to be a remarkable feat of prediction. I located him through the efforts of Mallory Hope Ferrell, and was able to meet him at his house in Hilton Head and spend many hours enthralled with his adventures both in 1953 and then with GE all over the world. He furnished me with color prints of the Crowell Long Leaf Lumber and Red River and Gulf RR railroad operations that he took in October, 1953, and reworked them many times in photo shop to get the color matched exactly with the color wheel that he shot that morning. His house had several rooms full of filing cabinets with negatives and prints, and his living room was a maze of cabinets and books. He was truly a remarkable man. I am curious if anyone on this forum knew him and may know of what happened to his photographs. Hopefully his heirs, (he mentioned nieces and nephews) have saved them and placed them somewhere that they can be accessed. If anyone knows anything, I would appreciate the knowledge.
