Watching the coverage of the Columbia yesterday, I couldn't help but reminded how fragile we really are.

As much as a hypersonic air/spacecraft doesn't seem to have much in common with a landbound train-one essential similarity does exist. We marshall great amounts of mass and energy and control it with our frail minds. This is an inherently risky proposition.

In a few months, those operations that shut down for winter rest and repair will fire up the prime movers and start throwing coal in fireboxes.
