Definately a huge improvement over the BN green and rust. Can't wait to see it with portholes and a new pilot. Great Job!

The two that remain have been "reserved" by MARC as potential "executive" or excursion-special locomotives ever since their retirement several years ago. MARC seems to have changed their minds on such a fleet or operation after some minor controversy about the acquisition of the former NYC round-end observation 48 (which was acquired through a trade of surplus RDCs and not any monetary expenditure). Regrettably, they have been stored in the open, and have been heavily vandalized and stripped over the years. Because of their extensive rebuilding (including EMD 645 engines replacing the original 567s), they are not a preservation candidate for local museums, nor are they realistically "organ donors" for any other E8 project (B&O Museum has a B&O E8 in the back pile). With a slew of CB&Q diesel preservation projects about (see the Mark Twain Zephyr below and several CB&Q E's elsewhere, including a C&S E5 at the IRM), this is definitely a very low priority. The best application for such power would be for someone like American European Express to acquire these for their own power. lner4472@bcpl.net |

MARC Train Service will listen to offers for these locomotive, but beacause of the way State procurement regulations work, we cannot entertain cash offers without having a full public tender offering, which management does not wish to do at this time. These locomotives have full 645 engine blocks (not 567 with 645 power assemblies) that just happen to be the newest engine blocks in our fleet, and at the least could be used in the State freight subsidy program Dewitt Geeps on the Eastern Shore. This also probably means that these locomotive have more value as parts than as locomotives. In offering a trade, think of something a commuter railroad, (or perhaps our designated operator lines) could really use. In the past a fully compliant 645 powered switching locomotive have been mentioned. We have had several tire kickers, plus one good offer that our CMO just did not think was quite enough. The locomotives have not operated since 1995, one needs a new main generator, our operating contractor has not been dilligent about keeping the stack caps intact, and they each have a 350 kw Cummins plant for HEP. And they have not been stripped as much as Sandy infers below, they just externally look like hell. These locomotive were included in the bid for the last overhaul of our GP 39's by Boise, but they grossly overbid their overhaul, and they were cut from the budget.
