Post subject: Fair of the Iron Horse Visiting Locomotives List
PostPosted: Fri Feb 07, 2003 8:14 am

B&O Museum has posted a partial list of visiting engines to the Fair of the Iron Horse on their website; go to the link below. Looks like mostly B&O Museum steamers and lots of visiting diesels, not many iron horses probably due to the current insurance crisis. I could only account for one visiting steam locomotive. I'm sure it's not easy to plan a huge steam event during bad times so rather than criticize their efforts let's give B&O Museum our collective support.

Can anyone attend this, or is it private? If it's publicly viewable, do you have to purchase tickets or can you just show up?

I'm sure this was posed innocently enough, but this is a question that burns my britches.

Dammit, buy a ticket. Even if they don't get a ton of big steam, these folks are jumping through hoops to get a lot of cool stuff in one location and they should be rewarded with BRISK ticket sales.

I doubt that anybody posting to this board, owning a computer and paying for net access, who can get to Baltimore, whether it be from 10 miles or a thousand needs to save money so badly that they can't pop for a ticket.

Stand up and be counted! Fork over a few quid!!!!

You can (already) book tickets on line. Go to the website link in the first post. For non-museum members it's $20 adults and $15 children--certainly reasonable. The actual pagents (parades) are listed as being daily at 10:32am, 12:54pm and 3:36pm.

I had heard the Rocket replica was coming over England, but the inclusion of the ex-Rockton-Rion exx-Washington & Lincolnton 2-8-0 203 is a nice surprise (see below link for info on this visitor). I wonder what visting steam locomotive is the listed "Porter 0-4-0T 1 (1925)" (BTW, this is NOT the museum's own ex-Saint Elizabeths Hospital Porter 0-4-0T 4). The line up of cab units--RDG, DL&W, SOU, and WM--sounds great.

Everything you want to know is at the link:

http://foih.borail.org/

As said, pagent tickets are 20 for the public and 15 for members. It's no great secret that there are places you could see most of the action without paying the nominal ticket price, but that would be in bad taste.

Dumb guess: Old Dominion Chapter NRHS's 0-4-0T Porter, actually listed in Conrad as being built September 1924?

Actually the "mystery Porter" was listed as being built in 1921--I quess I was thinking of 2-8-0 203's built date when I typed 1925. Typing too fast for brain capacity as usual!

Not to mention that the one place I can think of worthy of suggestion, an overpass, is in a nasty neighborhood on a heavily-trafficked street, with a chain-link fence that inhibits photography. In addition, city police are likely to be restricting access to the railroad via any of the pedestrian trails that are currently heavily traveled, if for no other reason than the safety of those pedestrians. (Hopefully, they can also keep the rock-throwing punks at bay as well..........)

Post subject: Cab unit fest with NO PRR E-8's?
PostPosted: Fri Feb 07, 2003 10:38 am

With all these cab units coming how come the PRR E-8's are not in the line up? They are Amtrak approved, maybe the thing to do is have them run a main line trip to Baltimore, that would increase attendence and get them there with their sisters. I know Mr. Leven participates on this list and was a supporter of a cab unit gathering at Hoboken. Is this a posibility?

PostPosted: Fri Feb 07, 2003 10:52 am

Either way, I'm not finding a matching loco at steamlocomotive.info. But considering that they managed to make a typo on one of their OWN locomotives, I suspect that this data sheet might be subject to revision.

Now where the heck did that doodlebug come from? Heck, I can think of one or two other doodlebugs that could easily be trucked in, or are fully FRA compliant.......

And what, no "Thomas"? <:-)

Can't speak for him, of course, but speculation was rampant on another list/forum a while back that the PRR E8s might end up as featured motive power on trips being run in conjunction with the NRHS/R&LHS convention that same time frame. I'm sure that the B&O Museum only wants to highlight equipment guaranteed to be on site for each parade every day. But never say never.

A 40" gauge locomotive is unlikely to participate I would think. Also, it is unservicable and I do not believe any work has been done on it.

I for one am planning on buying a ticket, even though I'm not sure I'll be able to attend ...
