All too often we think of the steam railroads being run by a bunch of "older" guys. For the most part, the "younger" guys have a hard time breaking into groups that have an average age of 97.5 years old. I know there are MANY young people roaming this and other Railroad type pages. We, as leaders of tourist railroads and museums need to reach out to these younger folks and welcome them into a wonderful industry full of great educational oppertunities and a many new frienships. Over the next three months, I will post a note like this one, asking for applications from young people wanting to become invloved in an active steam program. Here are a few rules: You must be 18 to apply Please send a formal resume with pictures if possible Send a list of contact people who can be contacted and who indeed know you. Write a short letter explianing why you want to work with steam. Please send your appliactions to: John E. Thanks for posting this John.I would only be able to this on the weekends and maybe holidays but only close rr to me is the Strasburg.I would be happy just to even be a fireman on a steamer. steamtrain90@aol.com

OOPS Hit wrong button. Just wanted to say this is a GREAT idea. The Alaska RR uses many high school age kids as hosts on their pasenger trains during the summer. Every RR and RR museum needs to encourage young people to participate or we will lose them forever because most will never know trains the way previous generations did. rgraner@aol.com

How involved is it to learn to be a fireman?Is there any books out there to read up on?I drove a 0-6-0 in williams grove and there was more to it than I thought but it was great..Any help would be appreciated.Hope everyone had a great weekend.. steamtrain90@aol.com

To answer your question, for hand firing I would recommend a book called "Fuel Economy" (available through Ken Riddle's publishing company). It got me started with some basics. Here at Heber Valley, John has just instituted a progressive training program for firemen through steam engineers. He has pulled/adapted instructional materials from some of the old manuals/catechisms and created a syllabus and testing system to learn as you go. No more 'grandfathering' of the 'old hats' -- everyone at Heber is to re-certify on the new system by the end of May. sc 'doc' lewis Heber Valley Railroad utweyesguy@aol.com
