Post subject: Sunken S-160s the Update

According to Tourret's "Allied Military Locomotives of the Second World War" 18 S-160s were lost in transport across the Atlantic. If anybody is really interested, I can give the specific locomotive numbers. Four were lost on a ship that hit an iceberg, and the rest were victims of Hitler's U-Boat War.

Would this be a job for Robert Ballard or Clive Cussler?

I doubt we need to go to the bottom of the ocean to find a genuine S-160. There are several in Britain that were re imported during the 1970s and 1980s. Last I heard, a few were for sale. Also, from what I understand, a few are still extant in Europe. My "dream" is to reimport one. By the way, check out the link (Thank you Railway Negative Exchange). Here we see an American locomotive, hauling American freight cars in Cherbourg, France. By the way, the crew was an L&N crew of the 728th Railway Operating Battalion.

There are still several derelict S160s in Greece, plus most of those that ran at Ft. Eustis here in the US aren't much better.

No need to repatriate one, there are seven in the states. Several of these could use a good home.

I believe two of these locos are off the New Jersey coast, laying alongside the deck of the freighter they were aboard. But truthfully, I hope nobody was thinking that pulling uo any of these two old virgin engines would be the start of restoring one for operation? I wonder what 60 years of saltwater immersion does to a new locomotive?

As per the other posts in this topic, there are numerous examples still around the world, and some in reasonable condition. Since a few were retired from Ft. Eustis just a few decades ago, one would have to speculate as to how they were allowed to deteriorate so badly in the interim.

As a member/volunteer of the SS American Victory here in Tampa (I do their video stuff), I transferred a film titled "Hannibal Victory" for them. This is a documentary of the maiden voyage of the ship Hannibal Vaictory in 1945. It was loaded in San Francisco and steamed to the Phillipines. The deck cargo was 4 S-160's and the film shows them being loaded, secured, in transport and off loaded. The engines were steamed up right on the dock when delivered (their tenders were filled prior to shipment). The film even has gun practice.
Amazing footage!

This is quite interesting, as Philippine Railways is 42-inch gauge. They did have some of the USATC 2-8-2s like those of the White Pass & Yukon, but I wonder where those S160s would have been headed? China, perhaps?

OOPS! They are 2-8-2's after all. Two numbers are 863 and 867. Looks like 4 locos plus several flatcars were shipped to the Phillipines when this film was produced.
Anyone have further info on them?
