Photo series of the arrival and assembly of White Pass & Yukon 2-8-2 No. 71 in the late-1930s. The locomotive arrived on a ship in crates, and was assembled at the Skagway, Alaska roundhouse without heavy lifting equipment. The 71 is derelict today at Dollywood in Tennessee. Sister 70 and ex-USATC 192 were operable there at last report.

Great photo series, but what is a sourdough referred to in photo 4? An Eskimo?

I believe the sourdough they refer to is a gold prospector, who might take the crate the tender arrived in for use as a small cabin to live in.

Post subject:  Re: sourdoughs

the sourdoughs were so called because they carried a small container of sourdough starter with them to make bread with, there twarn't no stores selling yeast in the vicinity, otherwise it was flatbread or hardtack.
