Post subject: More about Heber's "new" 0-6-0
PostPosted: Thu Feb 13, 2003 10:04 pm

Back when I was a fireman at Heber, and the operation of the shop was under the direction of Craig Drury, there was an attempt to acquire No. 300 and restore it. This was before Great Western 75 was put up for sale. At that time (1997) the Geneva Recreation Association, which is (was?) an organization for the employees of Geneva Steel, wanted to keep the 0-6-0 and wouldn't hear of it leaving Provo. The park where the 0-6-0 is displayed is very near the steel mill, although it is right in the middle of a neighborhood and very difficult to find. It is also a private park, which has made photographing No. 300 difficult.

Mike Lewis notes that N. 300 is missing many of its running gear parts. You will also notice that the couplers are gone, along with the bell, whistle, etc.. I have heard that the engine was long a 'parts source' for other 0-6-0s at the mill. It was eventually forgotten about, which led to its preservation. It is possible that the engine was being dismantled when someone had the bright idea to put it on display. You will note in the photo that No. 300's paint job is not in the best shape. The park has a sprinkler that sprays the right side of the engine on a regular basis.

You also might remember that there was a rumor in the 1970s that this engine was of D&RGW vintage, which has been proved untrue. It was built by Baldwin in 1925 for service at Geneva and worked there all its life.

Jeff...did you ever get to work with Bill Sherwood at Heber? I believe he was there when 618 underwent her first overhaul in 1994. One heck of a good steam mechanic.

Nope. Was at Heber often and took many slides back then, but I didn't start working there until after Mr. Sherwood had left. I think he was only there for the first few runs 618 made, then left for other projects.
