More in the Trainorders.com thread about lost locomotives: The Mikado in BC's Fraser River is a new one to me. The B&M 4-6-2 and Rock Island 4-4-0 are true stories.

Interesting note about the CN 2-8-2 which is described as one of those Mikados with the Belpaire firebox. I always thought those Mikes were particularly good looking locomotives. Does anyone know if any of them were preserved? And if so, where?

Thanks!

None preserved unless this is a true story. The preserved three CN 2-8-2s are all like the one at Steamtown.

Bob: Thanks. Kind of curious that none were preserved (I seem to recall that some were running pretty late in the steam era at CN.) Which brings up a question. How many Belpaire firebox engines are preserved (outside of the PRR examples of course)?

I believe there are a GN Mikado, Pacific and two 2-8-0s, plus five CB&Q 4-6-0s and one derelict 2-6-0. Anyone know of others?

A sad sight indeed.

Hey Kelly, isn't Strasburg building a Belpaire now?

I assume you meant US, but if you look to the UK there's scads of Balpaire equipped Great Western Railway engines preserved. I think of the as the PRR of England--relentlessly standardized, and relentlessly different from everyone else... :-)
