We would all like to thank everyone who posted, e-mailed, or called this last week with offers of help, or expressions of outrage. The one that rang truest was; “Hope you find the SOBs, kill them, burn their houses, and hand them over to the IRS!”

CouldnÂ’t have said it better myself.

We received many profitable leads for replacement number plates, and Wayne is well on the way to getting them ordered now.

#31 before and after. Her class lights were stolen, and are similar to the “8 ball style”, but they have hinged tops.

On a positive note, hereÂ’s whatÂ’s going on in the shop this week:

Blanks came in for a set of new main rods we are suppling to another railroad.

A new piston rod is nearly finished for the same engine.

Our PRR box car is nearing completion of an overhaul. All exterior siding has been replaced with new Honduras mahogany. The car will be painted in its previous PRR Star Union Line scheme.

Kelly,

Would it be possible when you have time to post or share via personal email the leads and info for the companies you are dealing with for getting new plates made? I was able to get some info from posts made here, but any further info is always appreciated.

Our museum is going to need to have replica/new plates made for our two small 0-4-0's at some point in the future, plus I would like to find a source for replica ALCO plates for an RS-1 at our museum as well. It just looks wrong without the plate on it. All of the plates that did we get with our locos are safe in storage, but we are going to need/want to re-apply them or a version of them at some point. Plus our Heisler fireless 0-4-0 did not come with any plates(number or builder) so we will definitely have to have something made.

Thanks and continued hope they find out who did this.

Dave,

You are looking at former Brooklyn Navy Yard #12(Also spent time on the Dexter & Northern I believe amongst some other places). Vulcan 1918 with an added air tank up front. Not sure if the air tank is going to stay in the future as it was a later addition. Some of our members think it looks wrong, but I kinda like it. ;0) Each to his own.

#12 was in private ownership for many years before being donated to us a few years back. It is currently in our shop with the jacketing removed and with all of its flues removed. We are evaluating it and our fireless Heisler for rebuild for possible future operation. #12 last ran around 1991 before a boiler problem put it out of service.

I will try to pose a more recent photo tonight of the engine in the shop. There is more info on the loco including a sound clip of the engine in service on the Tioga Central (?) in 1988 and pics of us moving #12 from Flemingville, NY to our museum at Industry, NY (Town of Rush). There is also some info on our Heisler 0-4-0 as well.

I felt angry when I read the first report of this but I tell ya after seeing what they did with pictures Im even more furious. The pictures make it more clear of what the bastards did.

I hate the fact that there are people in this country that would do this...and other things, but I'll stop here.

Kelly- I have book called Iron Horse and in the Strasburg section is a picture of a young guy at the throttle, the caption has the name Kelly..is that you?

Chris: I got out J. David Conrad's book and looked up the locomotive. In addition to service for the U.S. Navy at Brooklyn and the Dexter & Northern Railroad, she also apparently worked for the Abe Cooper-Watertown Corp. in Watertown, New York. If any one of these put the extra air tank on her, I say that it deserves to stay as an "in-service" piece of equipment. Extra air tanks that were added to steam engines many times showed up in odd locations and always made for an interesting locomotive. BTW, I agree that #12 looks good with the tank.

Yeah, Chris, I vote to keep it. GOAT has two long air tanks above the grabirons both sides of the saddletank and two single stage air pumps on either side of the smokebox door - more air stuff than engine - and it gives it a unique look among saddletankers.

If it shares a common spec with NHVRR Vulcan 17 we can probably assist with the Form 4 calcs - just did them a few months ago.

I have just returned to HO RR and I find theft and destruction are almost weekly occurences. A shame. Theft is either ordered--parts never to be seen again-- or for general sale-- flea markets, train shows etc. to sell used items where no one questions honesty. I have seen number plates at shows and wondered--how? I will take the time to make up my own -- "hot list" -- of stolen items to look for at SHOWS. If I find something I check it on my list and get the vendors card or phone number and give it to local D.A. to handle. Thats my best shot at this problem.

Dear Dave:
Your numbers won't help them a bit. One of the main purposes of revising 49CFR Part 230 was to insure that (read force) everyone obtains real time (not old time or someone else's time) numbers on their boiler(s) and do new, complete calculations to determine what pressure the boiler can be safely operated TODAY (not when it was built, etc.) Old numbers, even for the same locomotive are useless, you start from scratch and measure each part and calculate each part. The weakest part determines the current safe operating pressure.
FIY on the previous post in re-No.12: Abe Cooper was a junkman who happened to acquire a couple of steam locomotives and resold them, I do not believe that he operated them.

I did not make myself clear - the numbers derived from measurement could be plugged into the formulas we developed for a similar boiler, thus speeding the process along. I wasn't suggesting submitting a copy! One of our guys who is technically savvy came up with a computerized way to record and document the measurements for this simple boiler which made it a bit easier to find the dimensions required when you needed them, and plug them in to the appropriate equasion.

Yeah, every Vulcan 0-4-0 will have identical Form 4's with the C/N crossed out and another pencilled in............

I don't know the book, and I can't pass as a "young guy" any more, but since I am the only Kelly here, it may well be me.

Kelly,

It's you. It's a close up of you running (I think) 475. IIRC, a few other people that post here can be found "starring" in this same book.

BTW, look in your gift shop--you guys have (or at least had) this book. It's called "Iron Horses" by Mike Delvecchio. Nice coffee table book on steam locomotives and tourist railroads--lots of great photos.
