It's neat to see that there are still Wintons out there chugging away ... Are there any operating Cooper-Bessemer diesels operating ??? WAG1700 still has them but I don't think they are operable, any others ??

Not quite sure what you mean here, but GE 70 tonners have C-B 6 cylinder engines, and of course all of the GE road diesels have turbocharged 12 or 16 cylinder C-B prime movers that look a lot like Alco 251s. Some stationary power plants use them also.

Please! You're insulting my favorite loco prime mover... ;)

There are actually an awful lot of differences between a 251 and an FDL. Thankfully!

For anyone interested here's a pic comparing the exterior of the Alco 251 and GE FDL16. There are many internal differences, too.

I guess I gotta get more detailed ... In the 40's and early 50's the smaller GE locomotives came equipped with 6 cyl CB engines. For example ge13031 was originally equipped with two CB ENL-6 engines and the locomotive was rated at 800hp. In 1957 she was rebuilt at Erie with two Cummins VT1710 engines and the horsepower was raised to 960. Is there anybody out there still running these "small" CB diesels ? Are parts available ? How do they run ?

BTW: cooperenergy is a fascinating site.

The current California Region Timetable (Altamont Press 2002) shows the following California short lines with GE 70-ton units:
Almanor Railway (NE part of state)one: 166
Modesto & Empire Traction Co. (note: never electrified)possibly ten: 600-609
Santa Maria Valley: two: 70 & 80

Bay Area Electric Ry. Assn. aka Western Railway Museum (Rio Vist Jct.) has a 70-tonner, probably from Central Cal Traction (which was electrified)

Yolo Shortline (Woodland CA) has a 50-ton unit, not sure what kind of engine.

If you're looking for advice, I would try Modesto & Empire. It's been quite a while since I visited there, but "pride" and "friendliness" are the memories I've kept. Last time I saw SMVRR in action they were using a GP9, they probably keep the GE's for backup.
