| Post subject: | Hopeton OK Connection to Colorado Midland RR? |
I am looking for information about "L.F. Wilson" and "if" he had any connection with the Colorado Midland Railroad. I found an old plate (from the early 1900's) with a picture of "Rounding Hell Gate", on the Colorado Midland Railroad", on the front. On the back is "Made especially for L. F. Wilson, Hopeton, Okla. / If We Please You,Tell Others, IF We Don't, Tell Us". I would like to find out who "Mr. Wilson" was, or what business he was in. I have found a man by the name of "L.T. Wilson", who was a teacher and a lawyer around that time and in that area. I wondered if "L.F. Wilson" might have been connected with the railroad, someway. I would suggest asking this question on the Colorado Midland discussion group at Yahoo Groups. Someone may be able to help you there, as someone on the group probably has a list of CM officers. As a wild guess, I'm wondering if this might be a custom made tourist item picked up on vacation, perhaps at Manitou Springs. As most tourists spent the whole week, the plate could have been ordered a day or two ahead, stamped on the back with the person's name before firing (if the name is under the glaze), then picked up later. Incidently, the jagged rocks at Hell Gate hold the last vestige of a Colorado Midland locomotive, a tender that derailed and was never retrieved. http://www.geocities.com/jingram05/cmhistory.htm ryarger@rypn.org |

The suggestion about Manitou Springs and tourists seems the most likely connection, to me, too; and the information about the derailed tender is great information to add to my plate's story.
