I am working on a list of all existing roundhouses in the United States. I am asking all of you for help with this since I an not familiar with them all. I am looking for the following information on each: Railroad that built it Last/current railroad to own it Build Dates Current number of stalls Construction materials (i.e. brick/wood) Current Status (i.e. tourist/common carrier) Any Notes If you can help, post a message here, or e-mail me directly at webmaster@railfanusa.com. Please don't assume that I am familiar with even the most famous ones. Thanks for any help. RailfanUSA webmaster@railfanusa.com |

The National Railroad Historical Society (NRHS) has already undertaken such a task, and they have much of their research published on the web (see link below). Instead of starting from scratch, I think that it would be more useful to contribute your information to this existing list. I have been doing a fair bit of research various railroad related topics, and from this experience I can attest that it is much easier to work with one well detailed database than to have to compile information across several sources. > I am working on a list of all existing > roundhouses in the United States. It was built in the mid twenties by A&R and is brick. jhbohon@yahoo.com |

Lance, You are taking on quite a project! It may be possible with the Internet. Here's one for you. The Philips, Maine, Historical Society has re-built on the original foundations the 8 stall narrow gauge house from the Philips and Rangeley Lakes RR. And the Eastern Connecticut Railroad Museum has put a building back on the foundation of a New England Central roundhouse. 5 standard gauge stalls I think The Colorado Railroad Museum has built one from scratch a year or so ago. Again 5 stalls and this one is duel-gauge. My favorite recent revival is the Jackson roundhouse in St Paul. The original ?GN? building was standing but needed a lot of work and the removal of a lot of after railroad use structures. Pits cleaned out etc. Good luck with your project! ted_miles@nps.gov |
