Former New York Cantral depot at Saranac lake, NY, looking fine after years of disuse, dereliction and restoration. After years of dormancy, Adirondack Scenic trains run here again.

Bob, do you know how far the excursions run now? Can you ride all the way from Utica to Saranac?

Service between Saranac Lake and Lake Placid began two years ago. There has been talk that I have heard that they're gonna try to push south to Tupper Lake Jct. this year, but don't quote me, because I don't know for sure.

The current rails "in service" on the Adirondack Division are Remsen (and Utica) north to Carter, and S.L. to L.P. .

I lived in S.L. from 1994-96, and volunteered for the ASRR. I would stop by the (then unrestored) depot every day on the way to work to check the place out and to chase away the beer-drinkers, vandals, and urinators. It is REALLY great to see the building in the beautiful shape that it's in, although they made a MAJOR screw up (IMHO) when they tore out the original ticket booth, and put up part of it's wall in the middle of the room as the "new" ticket booth. It's kind of hard to explain to people who didn't see it originally, but trust me when I say whoever came up with that idea had NO idea what they were doing.

ON another note, it would be GREAT to see them REbuild the Tupper Lake Jct. station again!

Does anyone know if the Ne-Ha-Se-Ne station building is still standing? It was supposed to be destroyed, along with Seward Webb's lodge on the shores of Lake Lila, as part of NYS's Forever Wild program. That was in the 1980s but I never heard if it was or not.

According to the New York State Existing Stations web page (an excellent resource), the station still stands. However, it is described as being in poor condition.

I'm the one who took that photo. the exact date of that pic was November 5th, 1995, a Sunday, when three of us high-railed it down south from Sabattis to put a tarp on the roof.

My last visit there was in the summer of 1996.

The building is still standing, and not much has changed. There have been many worse buildings which have been restored over the years (ex. Adirondack Div.'s Woodgate station), so I would REALLY hope to see the place restored, but it's out-of-the-way location is a big negative factor as to why it's still in an abandoned state.
