a rusted out tender?

The decision has been made and HVRR No. 75 is going to get a rebuilt tender. A lot of weighing of pros and cons went into this. Ultimately, with the skills on-site, we will be able to build a new tank and coal bunker for 1/2 to 2/3 of the cost of one of those "amazing seal-it-all coatings" to be applied. Along with lasting another 95 years, the tank will have a greater capacity and will hopefully be more efficient at dropping the coal at the fireman's feet (reducing the "coal shagging" from the back of the tender).

The old tank was lifted from the frame today. Handrails, grab irons, bunker doors, tank-to-frame anchors, valves, etc. are all going to be salvaged and reused. The frame was lifted from the trucks which will receive some better wheelsets.

So what would you do with the old tank?

How about cutting it in half lengthwise and use it as an educational exhibit on what's inside a steam loco tender? I'd paint the water space blue and the fuel space black (did it burn coal or oil?). If there are baffles in the water space you could place some signs there to explain what they are and why they were needed.

Use it to deep-fry 500 or more turkeys at one time!

Spencer took the old tank off BC&G 4 and put it on the frame of their ACL ten wheeler. The original ACL tank was junk but the engine looks great on display with it's "new" tank.
