Southern Railway Locomotive Receives New Lease on Life

The North Carolina Transportation Museum is pleased to announce that its diesel locomotive no. 6133 will be restored using enhancement funds from the N.C. Department of Transportation and donated matching funds. Enhancement projects address environmental and quality-of-life issues such as, rail corridor preservation, historic preservation, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, scenic byways and landscaping. Enhancement projects give funds for needed restoration and improvement with a required 20% local match. The enhancement funds for the diesel locomotive no. 6133 included $85,000 with the N.C. Transportation Museum needing to raise the additional 20% match on the project ($21,250) to make the grand total $106,250.

Restoration on the diesel locomotive will include replacing old electrical wiring, rebuilding the 12-cylinder motor, repairing the locomotive car body and completing the job with a fresh coat of paint. The no. 6133 locomotive was a streamliner and was built in 1950. It pulled passenger and freight trains across North Carolina, including the famous Carolina Special and Piedmont, until it was retired in 1979 and donated to the museum.

The North Carolina Transportation Museum is no stranger to the use of the N.C. Department of Transportation enhancement program. One of the most important enhancement projects involved $5.8 million toward the renovation of the museumÂ’s 1924 roundhouse and related improvements. The enhancement projects have also been used for the restoration of North CarolinaÂ’s railroad stations, including the Salisbury depot.

Enhancement efforts are giving NCDOT a wider range of options for transportation in a new century. N.C. Department of Transportation official Laurie Smith says, "The enhancement program is creating and preserving treasures that can be enjoyed by future generations."

The N.C. Transportation Museum is located just off Interstate 85 (Exit 79) in Spencer, about halfway between Greensboro and Charlotte, on the site of what was once Southern RailwayÂ’s largest steam locomotive repair facility. The 57-acre site includes three restored buildings, including the Robert Julian Roundhouse, and an on-site train ride. Exhibits include 25 restored locomotives and rail cars, a working turntable, antique automobiles and examples of early, non-motorized transportation. The NCTM, which is administered by the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, hosts more than 100,000 visitors annually, including 23,000 school children.

Never heard of an F unit with only 12 cylinders before. Is it a typo or did this thing "borrow" a smaller 567 from a switcher or E unit?

You're right Tim, the FP7 does not have a 12 cylinder, but a 16 cylinder. The E8 at the museum has 2-12 cylinder prime movers.

What with Cadillac making a V-16 again, maybe you can get Road & Track to review the 6133 next April. One GM V-16 against another. ;-)
