> It will be interesting to see how they uncouple the engine from the tender given that the drawbar pins haven't been out since the 1950s'and are held in tension by the springs in the buffer. When we moved Milwaukee Road No. 265 out of a park it took us days to get a draw bar pin out. Knowing riggers they'll probably end up torching the drawbars. J.David jdconrad@snet.net |

J.David, Can you post pictures of the locomotive that you have been working on down in Texas? Any comments about the job? i gather that she will now be displayed inside? ted_miles@nps.gov |

Neither heat, nor jacking against the weight of the locomotive, nor freezing the pin with liquid nitrogen worked on PM 1225. This was due to rainwater flowing out of the coal in the stoker tube and onto the pin. The pin on the engine had to be drilled out with a magnetic drill press (it's about 14 inches long) and the remainder burned out with an air arc. I think the Kanawhas have roller bearings, so the fellows in Richmond will be saved the joy of polishing all those journals. This makes me recall the story of one former Kanawha owner who found out how easily these things roll downhill if you don't air up the brakes or properly attach a really big bulldozer for an anchor.
