Wabash E8 stripped for refurbishing in Roanoke. Looked like it hadn't been worked on for a while. What does it look like today? There's a second EMD cab unit behind it. What is the other one?

This was EMD's 10,000th unit. Here's an older photo from 1981, in the last solid blue economy scheme the Wabash used.

I note VMT's website does not list the E8 as an exhibit anymore. Where is it today? Would be a nice unit for a re-created Bluebird domeliner train.

Bob: You have kind of ruined my morning with this report of the current condition of Wabash # 1009. Didn't realize that she was in such bad shape. Deserves to be back home in the midwest. I can think of one museum who would love to have her!

I expect that Monticello would gladly accept it. Where is it in the older photograph? The miniature RR in the Foreground and the steamer in the background make me currious. Wasn't it at Horseshoe curve for a while after they moved out the K-4? (That or another Wabash diesel. I remember being a shocked little Wabash fan to see one in Penn. Just a little disapointed to, as I wanted to see the steamer. Then as now, I'm more of a steam fan than a loyalist of any particular road.)

Dave,

The photo was taken at Wasena Park, Roanoke where the then "Roanoke Transportation Museum" was situated until a flood in the late 80's forced its relocation to its present site in downtown Roanoke. The steamer next to it is NKP 2-8-4 #763. I certainly hope she gets restored either in Roanoke or elsewhere, as she is the only surviving Wabash E unit.

As far as I know when the K4 was removed from Horseshoe Curve, it was immediately replaced by the GP9 that is there today.

I am going to venture a guess that the steam engine in the back groud was the C&O H-8 not the NKP berk (sand domes too short and no driver behind the main)

As for the current location of the E8, as of a month or two ago she was still sitting just out side of the muesum display yard.
