Does anybody happen to know what has become of the origional wooden Pullman and coach that used to operate on the Nevada Northern? I know that they were damaged in 1996 when that flatcar crashed into the morning train, but to what extent? They were gorgeous cars, I would hate to think they've been irreprably damaged or that there is no move to restore them. Any information would be very appreciated. As best I understand the situation from seeing various news items over a period of quite some time now... Both coaches 2 & 5 were damaged in the collision on 17 June 1995. No. 2: Both vestibules buckled, the couplers and trucks sustained damage, the frames' I-beams were knocked out of alignment, and about 75 windows were broken. The force of the impact ripped most of the seats from the floor. Stored unfit for service and deemed not repairable. No. 5: Suffered damage to the draft gear, trucks and couplers. Remarkably, not a single window (including original leaded art glass ones) was broken. The force of the impact ripped most of the seats from the floor. Stored out of service. Over $225,000 has been invested in its restoration, but work has stopped/slowed due to lack of additional funds ($80,000) to complete repairs. Keith Albrandt kalbrandt@rypn.org |

The shop crew at the NN Ry have been rebuilding the draft gear and couplers for coach 5. We have trucks for the car, I believe Coach 5 will be in service this season. In regards to Coach 2, because of it's uniqueness to the Nevada Northern it will be undergoing a new evaulation within the next year. I believe with enough money (of course) Coach 2 will be put back in service. I want to take a page out of the book of the wooden boat folks. They have no fear in raising huge amounts of money and building (or rebuilding) huge wooden ships. When it comes to raising money the railroad family needs to get up to speed. (But thats a posting for another day.) We are in the process of evaulating all of the equipment at the museum. Again, due to the uniqness of the museum, I believe all of it should operate; from our two steeple cab electrics, to the coaling tower, to the rotary snowplow. Presevation in my estimation is not to put a piece of equipment just on display but to make it operational, to preserve the why's and how's. To give us a glimplse into the past similiar to the TV shows where a family goes and lives in a different time frame. Of course money is still needed and if you want to help preserve the Nevada Northern I encourage you to join the museum. You can do so by going to our web site. The Nevada Northern complex in East Ely is one of the premier railroad enviroments that has been preserved. All the buildings are there from the when this was a going copper hauling operation.
