"An aged Burlington Northern General Electric locomotive may be cut up for scrap value in Gillette, Wyoming, unless money is generated for its refurbishment at the Cam-plex energy exhibit. The exhibit employs two pieces of machinery, a large coal haul truck and a former BN GE U30C locomotive.

According to Cam-plex estimates, the group would have to pay $28,000 to repaint and refurbish both pieces of equipment or in comparison, pay around $13,000 to have the equipment cut up and hauled away as scrap metal.

"They want public comment before they decide what to do with it," Cam-plex general manager Dan Barks said.

The board set aside money last year to paint the haul truck and locomotive. Gillette City Council and Campbell County Commission, which have the final say on all budget matters at Cam-plex, rejected the idea.

The most expensive part of repainting the exhibit comes from the high cost of sandblasting. Carefully repainting all the original lines and logos also costs extra money. Cam-plex has contacted BNSF, however the company has expressed no interest to help maintain it."
