Further to the previous discussion on the status of the Black Mountain/Yancey RR in North Carolina, here is a photo of No. 1, later the famous Clinchfield fantrip locomotive. http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?september02/09-11-02/BlackMountain1SteamMikeSink_DRColl.jpg ryarger@rypn.org |

I have the Trains magazine discussing the rebirth of this ten wheeler. I was wondering if someone could tell what has happened to the engine since then. I do know that Tom (Moore?) got into trouble of some sort, hence a bigger program using C&O 2716 was cancelled. I also know the engine went to the B&O museum and they were going to operate the engine. Any filling in the gaps or clarification would be great! Thanks! Joshua joshua@joshuakblay.com |

The B&O Museum did operate former Clinchfield / Black Mountain 4-6-0 1 on select weekends during two summers, 1983 and 1984 (it's hard to believe it's been that long ago!). They pulled the open-sided excursion car that had been used on the Chessie Steam Special. The museum ran her out the "First Mile" trackage in the same fashion as their recent operations. No. 1 was in need of repair work after these two seasons and was retired for display inside the museum. It's under the half of the roundhouse roof that didn't colapse. I'm not sure of her current mechanical condition. BTW: the last time I visited No. 1, she still had the MU control box in her cab from her CRR excursion days, which was used to operate the trailing diesel helpers. Regards, Jim Robinson |

Bob, Thanks for a look back at an old favorite. Brings back memories of a diesel-free ride behind No. 1 in 1978. JWC that other Chattanooga website mail@steamvalley.com |
