Today is my birthday and I was wondering if there were any other historic events that took place today?

Next month in May 1869 the Promontary events took place; but what about April 9th?

Many happy returns from another obnoxious Aries.

Apart from the freeing of Baghdad, nothing springs to mind.

How about 1770 Austrailia discovered by British, 1865 Lee surrenders to Grant, 1942 Battan falls and in 1970 McCartney announces the break-up of the Beatles. Sorry nothing railroad related made the this day in history top stories

Ted,
Go to the link below from the History Channel and it will tell you everything you ever wanted to know that happened in history on this or any other day.

Happy Birthday,

It has to be close to the day the Titantic set sail from Southampton, or about the day she left Queenstown.....

April 9, 1961 was the first Iron Horse Ramble to Wilmington on the W&N Branch.

The real significance? It went past Luria Bros. in Modena - behind a steam engine!

Luria's was the principal scrapyard for RDG & PRR steam in the area. For a steam engine to pull a revenue passenger train past there was sweet revenge.

Today, Luria's yard is gone but 2124, 2100 and 2102 are still around.

Since you brought it up and since Iraq's railroad has been discussed a time or two, I thought this information may be of interest. In case you didn't watch Rumsfeld's press conference yesterday (4/9), he brought up the status of the rail that exists. He said that service is going to be restored soon and will be used to move water (and probably other materials). I was wondering if anybody else can fill in any more information?

Thanks,
Gerald W. Kopiasz

Thank you all for your good wishes!

I guess I will have to say the end of the War Between the States wins the toss.

It was by the way the first War where the railroads played a major role. From major equipment movements (cannons etc) to the Andrews raid that resulted in The Great Locomotive Chase.
