Milwaukee Road Coach #634 in Kenosha

Hello,

Does anybody know the current status of former MILW 634 in Kenosha, and if there are any specific plans for it. This coach is located at the former CNS&M station, which has operated for several years as a restaurant (formerly Spaghetti Station, now Mimi's Ristorante). The restaurant was extended to enclose the rear vestibule of the car, without modifying it structurally (with the exception of adding an external duct on the roof). Moreover, while the car was missing its seats, its interior bulkheads remained intact (on last inspection) as well as the underbody equipment. I believe that this was one of the cars which the MILW HEPÂ’d for use in Chicago commuter service with bi-levels.

As the link below indicates, the station site is currently for sale. While the car is described as an ‘attraction’, it plausible that it could scrapped to make more space on the property.

The following is the text of an e-mail I received regarding this car:
(I have no affiliation with this group)

The Western Union Junction Railroad Club in Sturtevant Wisconsin has been given a 1947 Olympian Hiawatha Coach that is located in Kenosha Wisconsin By The old North Shore Depot. We have five days to move the Car. Arrangements are already being made with Bain Nelson In Kenosha Wisconsin For cranes and with Transport National in Oak Creak Wisconsin to move the car. These are going to be costly things to be done. We are asking for some help. If you would like to donate to the Milw 634 fund please send a check to the

Western Union Junction RR Club
c/o Milw 634 Fund
P.O. Box 503
Sturtevant Wisconsin.

If we had more time I would of went to the Milw Hist. Society first but we are on a time frame of five days to move out or it will be cut up for scrap.

Pictures of the car can be found at

The car is in tact with all undercarriage items appearing to be present.

Please help us out

Thanks for posting this information – I guess I was right about the possible removal of the railcar “attraction” after all. I was personally hoping this car would have piqued the interest of the folks who “bleed orange and black” at the Illinois Railway Museum. It could have been (or could be used – if the deal to move the car doesn’t work out) to augment or supplant the cars used for the bookstore. (One car, a former C&NW wood RPO, is in serious need of attention.) It would also nicely complement the cosmetically restored CMStP&P baggage 1132 (pictured below, restored C. 1999), and provide a way for bookstore patrons to both browse books and watch trains. Eventually, it could be refitted with seats and returned to service as a coach. Either way, I hope that the car will be saved.

I don't suppose that it could be moved on active rails? The old K-D line is only a few blocks away, and that runs out to Bain where a quick trip up to Sturtevant on the old CNW "New line" then over the Waxdale spur to your site. Would that perhaps save any cost or more probably just add to the complexity of the whole affair. Keep us posted, I would like to visit the site when the move is planed.
Thanks!

Currently it looks like we will not be able to save the car due to the fact of the cost of moving and repairng the property. If we dont get the mony soon we will be removing parts off of the car for our touralux sleeper that we are working on moving also. We are a small group that currentl opperate a railroad meseum out of a former Milwaukee Road Bay Windo caboose.

Thanks for the intrest!!!!!

Could you provide some info on this car such as Name/Number, most recent owner, current location, etc. As I understand, only a few of these cars survive.

Also, in regards to moving the car, you may want to contact IRM, as they recently moved a former ACL dining car that was long used as a restaurant in Lansing IL. I believe that the car may be in Union by now.

The Touralux sleeper is Car #5744 Car Name was Mount Rainier, unfortunally Milwaukee Gutted the car and turned it into a work car, the only thing in it is a toliet and a shower. Our plans are to convert it to a space to expand our meseum display space and a place to hold our meetings and maybe even rent out the space for special events. we hope to have the car moved to Sturtevant this summer. If you want to help we are accepting donations. If any one sent money for the coach they will be notified and given an option of donating towards 5744 or we will send their check back to them. We will not cash any check untill the party authorizes us to put their money towards 5744 movment and fixing up.

Thank you everyone for your intrest
