Anyone have any experience or opinions about using "elastomeric" roof coatings on metal round-roof coaches or dome-car roofs? Pro's: Con's: Thanks. |

I have used these coatings on soldered seam metal roofs, canvas roofs, and welded steel arch roofs. If the substrate is cleaned and prepared they seem to be a reasonable approach at reasonable cost - but depending on storage and service conditions not to be considered permanent. I like the thick mud and tape you can use for patching small holes and cracks before applying cover coats of elastomeric, as well as its tintabilty and ease of application. If you use them outdoors or in service, plan to get up on the roof and spot scrape and patch every couple years. Doesn't cost much in time or money to maintain either. There was a roof coatings thread a few weeks back - some new high tech elastomers have been developed if I recall correctly which could last longer with less maintenence. Don't have a clue about dome car roofs. dave irondave@bellsouth.net |

Friend sez he uses the stuff on a Budd roof (not a dome) since 1989. Lasts about 8 years. Plusses: Â It stops the leak It fills in the cracks in the roof It stays in the cracks even after it's gone off the roof. Â Minuses: Â Looks lousy Looks worse after it ages Electric City Trolley Museum Association |
