Southern Railway/BR 0-6-0. One of the most unusual looking engines around. I presume the boiler was round, in the normal manner. Any idea why designer Bullied chose to make the cladding (jacket) in this configuration? How many of these survived?

Only 1 of the locomotives survivied. They were "war babies" being designed to be built cheaply during WWII. I think the jacketing was a continuation of the "air smoothed" casing he developed for his 4-6-2s. Notice the loco has no running boards, so I would assume that the jacketing hides the minimal equipment that is on a British locomotive. Had Bob asked this question a few months ago, I would have had the reference material here, but alas, it is back buried in the library.

The Bulleid 0-6-0 Q-1's were designed and built in 1942 to "austerity" standards due to war time constraints on materials, hence to least amount of metal to cover the boiler and the lack of running boards. These were the last 0-6-0's and most powerful 0-6-0's built service in Britain. No. C1 is the only surviving loco and is displayed at the Bluebell Ry in Sussex,UK, on loan from National railway Museum in York. Go to this link for info:
