I remember reading about an event at Knott's back in January, and since I'll be in Orange County next week I'd like to check them out. Their web site says "daily departures", but I'd like to know a bit more about when they run. Thanks in advance...

Al,

They operate a loop around the park, so trips are pretty much all day. The trick to a good railfan visit is to inquire with the engine crew about seeing the yard and shop. If possible, you might get a guided tour at a shift change.

My wife and I were lucky enough to get one a few years back and it was really worth it. The folks on the railroad are very proud of what they have and fully understand the historic value of the pieces.

Keep in mind that in the off-season it has been common practice for many years to run the Goose as an economy measure (just like the RGS did) instead of the steam locos 340 & 41. Ridng the Goose can be a treat in itself because for years it only ran for employee night, or if both steamers were B/O. However, it's not the same as seeing the steam engines in operation. Best to call in advance to see what is running if you only want to see live steam.
