To anyone who has been around an operating railroad, the aromatic mixture of creosote, fuel, greases etc creates a uniquely identifiable smell and a lasting impression; however, many static displays/museums do not provide this sense to their visitors. Visitors are often greeted with creative and informative visual or audio displays of the railroad environment; yet the identifiable railroad smell is absent. Think about the effectiveness of the Smithsonian/Southern #1401 display if a little railroad whiff was available. Obviously, this particular smell can be created via an operating railroad; however, many of our present static museums/displays do not have the necessary resources to make this possible. In our age of environmental protection and concrete ties, is this unique railroad texture endangered or has someone been able to closely replicate this aroma for future generations?
Ken Middlebrook

Interesting thread - how much of the reality of dirt, clutter, smells and noise can we realistically provide to our visitors? Issues can be ppractical as well as legal.
Dave
