Post subject:  AS IS-WHERE IS

Having read the post on the Reading FP-7 plates I figured I'd wait until things calmed down to make a comment.

Every piece of equipment that Juniata Terminal Company has ever purchased from a class one railroad, weather it be a complete locomotive, a component, or a highway vehicle had one thing in common. The words "AS IS - WHERE IS" on the material purchase order. I bet if you dusted off the paperwork for the FP-7's it's there somewhere.

If the units had the original plates mounted when they were inspected prior to purchase then it seems to me that you own them. If not, then you don't. Personally I would love to have the original plates from PRR 5711 & PRR 5809, but I don't loose sleep over it. They were not on the units when I inspected them at Altoona and Huntington, and I don't feel that I'm entitled to them. For all I know the third trick Asst. Shop Supt. at the Harrisburg Diesel Shop told the Gang Foreman to tell the Boilermaker to wack them off for him....everything has that kind of story out here.

I think the only thing you can accuse the guy on Ebay of is being "Low Class". No doubt though he is out there when they run with camera in hand. I wouldn't expect him to buy a ticket to support their operation.

The railfan/ebayer behavior that does put me over the deep end is the removal of "accesories" from units that are restored or part of someones operation. I talked to the Union Pacific mechanical officer in charge of the Republican Convention train in Philly and he related the story to me of how two sets of reproduction builders plates were removed and they finally went to stickers. If an employee did this he should be fired...if a buff did this he should be locked up. The theft of horns on the West Chester recently and Cape May Seashore Lines last year are excellent examples. Class ones's are not immune...I can't tell you how many times someone has stolen all the air horns from road power laying over at the port of Wilmington...A big road like Conrail can absorb the loss to a point(even though the cost came out of my management center)but a little road or an individual can't.

Those are just my thoughts....Flame away...I can take it.

Dear Mr. Levin,

Thanks for the good explaination, which
matches TYBR's experiences. Now it's not
necessary for me to post my slightly sarcastic
accounts of purchases I've made or am familiar
with.
Also, thanks for sharing your magnificent
collection with the public.
