Considering SD45's from the Great Northern, Erie Lackawanna, Norfolk & Western, and Southern Pacific and several FP45's from the Santa Fe are already in museums, I'd say an F45 might be the choice. Only a handful of F45's remain and all are stored or retired. The NYS&W still has one ex-BN F45 currently stored at their Utica, NY engine facility. Although it's being used as a parts supply, externally it looks intact. I don't have an opinion on whether it's "worth it" or not, but I do know CN is selling the ex-WC SD45s and three F45s, so units are available. They also have three BN E9AMs for sale, plus the four Algoma Central FP9As and a pair of GMD1s. There are also a lot of GP40s and SD40s for sale - these are much more typical units and I do think it's worth preserving an example of each. At last July's CNIC auction, "retired running" SD45s were going for about $20,500, the F45s for $16,000. (That doesn't mean they still run - that depends on how much jewelry the shop forces removed while the units were on the dead line.) See link below for a complete list of CN units for sale. I should mention that the SD45 and the F45 are both ex. NYSW's. The current asking price is about $5,000 each. The F45 has a B/O'ed prime mover with a broken crankshaft and the SD45 runs but is missing traction motors. I'm currently seeking help with funding for both units. Thanks, Dan BNsd40-2@RRmail.com |

I don't know about the builders's plates. but i wonder how much they will be paying for diesel oil to run it on some museums's dispaly track way up in decades to come. Steam engines can run on wood or coal; but lube oil at $1000. a guart? It could happen! ted_miles@nps.gov |

Synthetic lubricant is slightly cheaper than $1000/qt and your exhaust may smell of french fries or peanuts but what the hey! 3.
