One of the latest news briefs mentions the Western America Railroad Museum in Barstow, CA. If you haven't seen it, their site has a complete story covering the group's efforts at stabilizing and preserving Santa Fe 4-8-4 2921, long a resident in a Modesto park. Beginning about 1995, the group set out to obtain the locomotive for their museum, an effort which has apparently proven unsuccessful.

The website story goes into great detail about their positive dealings with the City of Modesto and the physical things they accomplished on the locomotive. It is a good primer for those who set out to perform cosmetic work on a large, roller bearing engine, including one like the 2921 that has been caught in flood waters. Though they didn't achieve their goal of obtaining the locomotive, what they did accomplish went a long way toward conserving it should the opportunity and funding become available to complete the task. Well worth reading!

It is a great story, additionally in the original SBRHS publication that this story appeared in were photographs of 2921 going into the park way back in July of 1960! That story and the images were created by good friend and longtime SBRHS supporter Stan Kistler. Copies of that magazine are available on the Gifts& Souvenir page of the SBRHS website.
