I have question, when a steam locomotive's weight in operating condition is given, is that with or without water in the boiler? Same question for the tender, is the weight with fuel and water or empty. If it is with fuel and water, is it filled to capacity or 50% etc.<p>Roger Hahn<br> Belpaire@aol.com |

Here's the way J. David Conrad describes the engine weights as found in his two volume set "The Steam Locomotive Directory of North America":<br> "Engine weight in working order, less tender if equipped (as given by the builder or by the operator) in pounds. It should be noted that the weight is accurate only within +/-5% and that the operators of the locomotives often found discrepancies in calculated weights."<p>The key words are "in working order", thus WITH a boiler full of water.<p><br> midlandblb@cs.com |
