On Saturday, thanks to information given here, I went to Claremont, N.H., for the Flying Yankee Open House. This train was built in 1935 by Budd for the Boston and Maine R.R. and is one of the earliest streamliners. The restoration is essentially complete on car B, the middle one. The interior is elegant and the plush seats invite one to sit. The stainless steel exterior still has its original shine, although here and there are sports that have required repair. The last car of the three is stripped at the moment making possible detailed examination of its structure which seems to be entirely welded stainless steel. Most impressive is the power car. The engine has new pistons and cylinder liners at astounding expense. It is not quite in place yet and lacks its head but it is certainly impressive to look into those eight cylinders of 8" diameter. In the engineer's compartment, the major controls are in place but gages and other controls remain to be installed. Although certain changes are mandated by present day requirements in order to have an operable train, it is clear that much attention to details of all sorts and the maximum degree of authenticity has been provided by the Board of Directors and the Claremont Concord R.R. which is doing the work. The train is actually owned by the State of New Hampshire and is expected ultimately to be used in excursion service from a base in Concord. However, there is still a lot of work to be done and money needed to bring the restoration to a triumphant state of completion. The Claremont Concord R.R. is an active freight railroad and operates a remnant of a little over two miles of the former Claremont and Concord R..R., previously a branch line of the Boston and Maine. There is a passenger excursion train from the Amtrak depot in Claremont to the village center. On the road to the Open House, we saw B&M coach 3633 which sits in poor condition at the junction of N.H. routes 11 and 103 near Sunapee a few hundred yards from the former Claremont and Concord roadbed.
