The Middletown & Hummelstown is now on the "home stretch" in their efforts to return their ex-CNR mogul No. 91 to steam. Work on the tender has been completed, boiler work is done and has been hydro'ed twice (and passed), and the engine has been partially repainted as of this writing. One of the M&H folks said it will likely be test fired at the end of June with testing on passenger trains this July and August. Work was done by the M&H's Brian Bachman, formerly with Mid-Continent and Strasburg RR. She has not run since the 1988 season when 91 was sidelined with broken staybolts. The tender will be lettered "Middletown & Hummelstown" though I sincerely hope they retain her CNR look--centered headlight with square number plate and triangular number boards. After a lapse of fifteen years, coal smoke will once again rise over Three Mile Island!! |

I am looking forward to her running, and hope she can make an occassional Monday or Tuesday run, so I can ride behind her on one of my "weekend" days off. |

Hello An employee of the M&H (and a good friend of mine) sent me a link to a trains newswire blurb about the engine being taken out for display on this past May 8th (not steamed yet). Looks largely complete and very CN-Like. See attached link for picture, text from article attached below... M&H's ex-CN 2-6-0 makes public debut MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - Middletown & Hummelstown Railroad's ex-Canadian National 2-6-0 No. 91 made her first public appearance, albeit not under steam, to attend Kuppy's Diner's "Spring Car Cruise-In" May 8. Built by the CN's Montreal Shops in 1910, the engine was purchased in the mid-1980s by the M&H Railroad from a private collector, moved to Pennsylvania dead-in-tow by rail, and operated only on a handful of trips in the summer of 1988. Since that time, she rested out of service on a yard track exposed to the elements until the summer of 1999. Led by Brian Bachman, the M&H's superintendent of transportation and resident steam mechanic, more than a dozen volunteer trainmen, conductors and engineers for the M&H have been actively working on the Mogul since she was moved into the railroad's new engine shop in 1999. Once completed, the locomotive is expected to hold down regular weekend and special passenger assignments on the M&H late this summer and fall, including freight duties when called upon, operated by her restoration crew. Show attendees were invited to climb aboard the cab of the locomotive where donations were collected for a charity. Wouldn't it be great if Strasburg's #89 could steam over there and doublehead with 91, since they are sister locomotives? There are several E-10's still around. As far as I know 91 will the 2nd returned t steam. (89 is the other). 92 is in Marshallton Delaware, (Wilmington and Western) stored unservicable, and #96 is in the same condition on the Ohio Central.
