I hope you will forgive an off topic request but there is a lot of historical brain power posting here!

Anyone know anything about the Hercules gas engine company? My museum has a cira 1910 model with 2 36" flywheels.

May be San Francisco origin or from elsewhere? Any books to look at?

Not so far off as you think, I'm pretty sure Hercules made engines for Vulcans and other critters.
