Post subject:  Interurban Body Threatened in Bridgeton, NJ

An article linked on the flimsies page (and copied below) discusses the planned destruction of what I believe to be a former interurban car. I have only seen the car once while passing through Bridgeton, so I do not have any specific information about its heritage; but it was clearly not a piece of steam road equipment. It is not listed in the (excellent) Online Roster of Preserved North American Electric Railway cars. Does anybody have any information about this car or photos of it?

Best,

Little Spot to become M. River Diner

MAURICE RIVER TWP. -- The former Little Spot restaurant, closed for several months, is slated to reopen late this year as the Maurice River Diner.

Applicants George Poulianas, George Stergiou and Mike Sinagridis plan to remove the railroad car that was part of the former restaurant, on Route 47, in Dorchester, reconfigure the existing building and create a 1950s- style diner, with neon and stainless steel decor.

Preliminary site plan approval was given by the Land Use Board on Wednesday and a public hearing is scheduled for June 4. Several waivers for the site plan were granted, since those items related to existing conditions, such as landscaping, which already were addressed when site plan approval was granted for the Little Spot.

Engineer Paul LaPierre asked for a waiver to be allowed to continue with the 49 existing parking spaces instead of increasing the number to 51, which would be required for the increase of seating capacity from 139 to 160.

Poulianas said usually only 80 percent of seating capacity is in use. Seating will be provided by booths, tables and stools at a counter.

Architect Ronald Fermano said that along with the railroad car, an existing deck would be removed and an addition will be constructed where the railroad car now is located. A new vestibule and entrance also will be created and restrooms will be enlarged.

"It will be a retro diner motif with soft lighting," he said.

Board member Johanna Carrara expressed concern about the retro motif, noting that generally the houses in the area are 100 years old.

"It's so modern. The 1950s is modern for us," she said.

Board member Lynn Jessick agreed. Both said the diner conflicts with the Master Plan, which promotes a historic character for the township.

The board also approved a minor subdivision for Irving Lee Beggs, which creates four new lots. Three front on Route 47 and the other on a paved section of Carlisle Place Road. The Pinelands Commission is requiring that a drainage basin be installed on one lot, maintained and inspected periodically. Solicitor Jim Seeley said a restrictive covenant should be written into the deed placing the responsibility for maintenance on the owner of that property. He said an engineer could give a report on the condition of the drainage basin at the time a certificate of occupancy is issued for any dwelling to be built there

A public hearing was held on an application to build a stable closer than the required 100 feet from the property line of a Milmay property. Wayne Reed, who said he has an agreement of sale for the property, said the barn would be about 135 to 140 feet from the nearest residence and would have a corral with riding area and pasture on the 3-acre property.

A stipulation was made that no manure will be stored closer than 200 feet from an occupied dwelling.
