In addition to the shot of 2-8-2T 37 in the below thread on locomotive 37, there are other shots of W&C (featuring ex-USN 0-6-0T 3) that were posted to the railfan.net ABPR archive by Bill Waller. See the below link for a shot of 3 taking water at Concordville. More photo links to follow. Regards, Jim Robinson W&C photo |

Jim, Thanks for the effort to post the photos here. Old #3 is a great little engine, I hope that one day she will get to have a fire in her belly. Tom Gears > Ex-USN 0-6-0T 3 powering a special extended > trip to Kennett Square, PA. > Regards, > Jim Robinson |

Jim, Thank you so much for the pictures. I remember riding on the line as a small boy, and I do have many memories, and I do remember that #3 was painted blue. It also had the fake stack, headlight and cowcatcher that are visable in the picture. I know Kurt Bell has an article in an upcoming, Friends of the Railroad Museum of Penn's MILEPOST newsmagazine on the W & C. I provided some current pictures of the line and the equipment. Although the line was supposively torn up, many traces of it still exist, including bridges, rail, (with and without ties) the switch at Wawa, 2 of the coaches that were made from old box cars)and the delapadated old freight station at Concordville. Of course we all know aboy 3 and 37 and where they are. Thanks again Paul plc95@yahoo.com |

> Although the line was supposively torn up, < SEPTA (the local transit authority) still owns the line, and the only "tearing up" has been done by Hurricane Agnes, vandals, and construction. I was one of the few people who took a SEPTA - PennCentral MP54 to Wawa to ride the W & C. At that time (summer of '68 or 9) it ran Friday thru Monday and PennCentral ran Tuesdays and Thursdays, so there were trains 6 days a week on the branch. Are there still cars stored at Chester Heights? |

Ex-Wilmington & Western, exx-Wawa & Concordville, exxx-USN 0-6-0T 3 as seen on Delaware's Queen Anne's Railroad. After serving on the W&C, 3 lost her bright blue paint and "1880's appurtenances". IMO, these "War Department" 0-6-0T's were "lookers" in terms of your typical WD design engines. Hopefully 3 will someday find a home where she'll operate again as well. See below link for a Bill Harris photo of QARR 3 from the railfan.net ABPR archive Regards, Jim Robinson W&C 3 in a later life |

They are on what had been a siding just off Station Avenue in Concordville. They are at the same location where the station for the line had been. They are boarded up and rotting. I had heard about SEPTA still owning the rights. There would be a problem if the unlikely event of them wanting to reactivate the line ever came about, a home on Pole Cat Road sits right in the middle of the right of way. I know this because there is a preserved piece of track on their property, and it leads right up to their house. I know that some of it was delubrately, and legally, torn up. The entire section by the concordville station area except the siding where the coaches are has been removed. The area from WAWA tower with the switch, while the switch is still there, the tracks are gone, but not covered over and it is too high to have been washed out. There is also part of it that is a nature trail. The most interesting , and sad, stretch is at the Ivy Mills Road crossing. The rails are there on each side of the road, but nothing else. No ties, and the earth is washed away several feet. The rails dangle in mid air, but basically in the same position they would have back when this was an active line. The street , Ivy Mills Lane is holding the rails in place. I'd love to hear more W and C memories from anyone Paul plc95@yahoo.com |

The first time I saw a live steam engine was at the W & C. I was only about 4 or 5. MY family went for a few rides as we lived nearby. After the railroad quit by my Dad and I used to stop by and visit the locomotives. Two things my Dad recalls. The noise scared the h*** out of me. Also they let our dog ride the train. The conductor announced something like " 30 adults, 10 kids and 1 dog". The station was beautiful, I was very upset when it caught fire. I have a couple of dumb questions. Did the train generally run east or west? Did it just push the train back or was there a run around? -Alan Levy Alanl759@aol.com |

If you are doing an article about the W & C you are welcome to phone interview my Dad. He is not into trains as much as his son, but he may be able to recall some info about the line. E-mail me if you are interested. -Alan Levy Alanl759@aol.com |

It ran East from Condordville to Wawa. It then reversed and went backwards, it was a push pull operation. I know that #3 always faced east, but I think #37 faced west, even when it ran. Although it is not what caused it's shutdown, there were a number of complaints from residents who lived on Pole Cat Road about the smoke and the noise. This is much like (on a smaller scale) what is what's happening withe The New Hope and Ivyland. Paul plc95@yahoo.com |

I'll make a note of your offer. I have another three days of the grad school semester remaining, then I'll dive back into my W&C article. FYI I recently found the W&C guest register book from Concordville depot (c.1967-1968) with some interesting names logged in from preservation circles. Stay tuned. Thanks again, K.R.
