For the folks old enough to remember (or the "young'ns" still interested in) the "stone age" of US steam railway preservation (ie: steam tourist lines of the 1960's and '70's) there has been a gold mine of archived photos (including scanned postcards) available at the "ABPR Image Archive" at railfan.net. I've been sort of "archiving the archive", culling out numerous links to circa 1960-1980 steam tourist line photos from this HUGE photo archive (which cover all kinds of railroad interests from around the world). Want to see the late Sam Freeman's ex-FEC 4-6-2 148 on mainline fantrips; ex-H&BTM 2-8-0 38 at upstate NY's Rail City Museum; Empire State RR Museum's 2-6-2 103 running tourist trips on the Middletown & New Jersey RR? It's all here and a LOT more. Example, if someone asks about Mr. Reed Hatch and the long-gone White Mountain Scenic RR that ran in AZ, hopefuly we can link up to some photos. Just to prove I know what a 2-6-2 looks like, allow me just one more photo link (see below)... this time a photo of the Empire State Railway Museum's (of "Steam Passenger Service Directory" fame) ex-Sumpter & Choctaw 2-6-2 103 running tourist trips during the mid/late 60's over the Middletown & New Jersey RR (Middletown & Orange) in New York. Again, the website is at www.railfan.net Click on "ABPR" in the header if you want to search this database. Note, if you link a photo to this board or any other site, they ask that you credit the "railfan.net ABPR Archive" and the photographer (or poster) in your link. > How do you search the database? Unfortunately, there isn't a search feature. THAT would be too easy! You have to check the thumbnails that were posted for a given day of each month. The archive is updated at the end of each month. As time allows I've been slowly working through this massive 6 year photo archive, pulling out links to relevent-interest photos (ie: photos of early US steam railway preservation, tourist railroads, etc). There are hundreds of "relevent photos" out of many thousands of entries, but it isn't quite as bad as it sounds! I've found some real gems that have made the effort worthwhile.
