Come one come all! This weekend the Wanamaker, Kempton & Southern RR in Kempton, PA will celebrate its 40th anniversary with train rides, a night run on Saturday evening, motor car rides, shop tours, food, etc. Engine 65, an 0-6-0T built by Porter in 1930, will be steaming. Hope to see y'all there! |

The WK&S is a great train ride. They have been a mainstay while many others have came and went. The people are always nice, the trains run well, and it is always a good time for all. I was up there around this time last year and rode behind the 0-4-0 Porter #2. I'll have to come up on Saturday and check it out. > Come one come all! I was traveling in eastern Pennsylvania last Saturday and was able to stop by the WK&S, which has been on my "to do" list for a long time. They had a private event going on - a combination wedding reception, gas engine show, and motor car meet(!). Despite being closed to the public, they graciously gave me a shop tour and invited me to look around as much as I wanted. I was very impressed with what I saw. The WK&S appears to be a good example of what a small group can accomplish when they don't allow their ambitions to outrun their resources. I hope to return someday for the train ride. I was told that the 0-4-0T has some staybolt problems and is unlikely to steam this year, but that the 0-6-0T is the regular engine and would be running the next day. On the same trip I stopped at the New Hope & Ivyland, which was running diesel. Was told that 2-8-0 #40 was being put back together and is expected out in time for Memorial Day weekend. I also made it over to the Black River & Western, which has been running diesel excursions for several years. Work is underway to bring the steam engine into compliance under the new regs and while nobody wanted to venture a completion date, the job is moving slowly but steadily along. I did make it up on Saturday. Sorry the weather wasn't better, but you guys put on a great show. It was well worth the trip. Here's to 40 more years. > Come one come all!
