ON THE OERY TWO BIG FREIGHT MOTORS, ....50
AND 51.....ALSO A LITTLE HISTORY OF THESE TWO
BIG MOTORS WOULD BE MOST HELPFUL....

Dear Charlie: I can't you tell the exact colors, but the Oregon Electric paint schemes can be seen in photos of the locomotives in Central Electric Railfans Association Bulletin No. 107 "Route of the Electroliners". There is a headon shot of No. 50 (CNS&M No. 458) and a 3/4 view of No. 51 (CNS&M No. 459) on pages 165 & 168 respectively.
These were neat engines. I rode the 459 quite a lot, if you showed interest, were careful and stayed out of the way, the crew would let you ride along. The regular motorman on the freight run from North Chicago Junction (Pettibone Yard) to Mundeleine and Kenosha was Dick Peters, and the 459 was his favorite locomotive. I rode No. 458 at least once, but it mostly sat around unused. When on the road it was incredibly noisy (think riding around inside a 55 gallon drum) and had very poor visibility. 459 had good visibility and a warm cosy cab. Too bad the No. 459 wasn't saved. It had two sets of trolley poles at each end. They would put them both up if they had a lot of cars. There was a junction near Lake Bluff where the pole tender would have to "hop" the poles from one set of wires to another while we were running along at 30 MPH or so. Pretty neat stuff for a kid to see first hand.

I JUST FOUND (6) SIX OLD COMPANY PHOTOS (1941)
OF OE RY. #50 AND #51.......BOY THEY WERE BIG
MACHINES (1085 HP ) AT THE DRAWBAR !......I DID
NOT KNOW THAT THEY WENT TO THE NORTH SHORE !..
AND YOU SAY THE #459 IS STILL AROUND ?.....
