Someone asked about the condition of the NYC Mohawk on another board and this is what we said in reply. We thought more people would be interested in it. - Most people don't know that nearly all of the ground we use is landfill, including the 1850s fill that leads to the tunnel. The ground under the Mohawk was slowly sinking and we were monitoring it. Last winter we connected the isolated track with panel track and removed everything. We're a bit conjested now as a result. The sag was filled and the track has been completely rebuilt with heavier rail. We will place exhibits back on it soon. The lineup is not settled yet, but the Mohawk will not be back in the same location. Everything will look great by the time of the Association of Railway Museums annual meeting that we are sponsoring this Sept. Our new trolley loop will be done, as will a new restroom building in the same area, styled to look like a train station. We're finally going to have sewer connections instead of septic tanks at each building. Landscaping of this area will be the final part of this project, as will additional electical service connections so we can finally light up the Big Boy's cab and firebox. These are the first tangible results of our capital campaign, which hopes to build a new visitor center and exhibit building as we continue to improve the museum and the state of our collection. For the first time that I can remember, you can take clear shots of Burlington shovel nose "Silver Charger" #9908 on the engineer's side! I must have shot at least a dozen shots of the right hand side (if not more) when I last visited in August 2002. Thanks NMOT! It also made repainting both sides of the three heavyweight Burlington cars behind the "Silver Charger" much easier. The South sides really needed it.
