There is going to be an effort later this summer to renew the paint on Great Northern Business Car A-3 at Nevada City, Montana. The car will be repainted into it's current Pullman green paint, though the car has been also painted in Empire Builder colors previously.

Did the Great Northern have its own recipe for Pullman Green? or did it use a standard color. If anybody has painted GN equipment and has useful documentation, I would like to hear from you. If there is an online source for in service photos of the car, that would be most appreciated too.

The Dulux color number is 5502H. 93-nnn are automotive enamel numbers, 188-nnn are industrial enamel number. Use the automotive one, provided you can get it mixed because it yellow chromate is one of the ingredients. The orange was 082, by the way.

What a neat little car! Open platforms, looks like it's steel-sheathed over wood, Waukesha propane tanks underneath, and are those CB&Q commuter car roller bearing trucks? Any history on this gem?

"Great Northern Business Car A-3

This is car is a wonderful example of something not being even close to what you think it is. This car started life as Barney and Smith built wooden coach 265, built in July of 1906. It was renumbered as coach 3255 in March 1908, and again to coach 587 in April of 1926. It was finally rebuilt into its current configuration in April 1927. In effect, this is an entirely new car, utilizing the interior components of the original coach. The construction methods used are representative of 1920Â’s steel car building. The car is now steel framed, and steel sheathed."

Hi,

In addition to the info others have already provided, you can see GN's colors on line at the Great Northern Railway Historical Society site at www.gnrhs.org. I think the info is under REFERENCE SHEETS. You'll note that the Pullman Green used by GN had more of a brownish tinge to it than that used on some other roads.
