Santa Fe 2-10-4 5030 is an anomaly, displayed at the end of the branch to Santa, Fe, NM, where it never ran. In the 1980s, concerns over asbestos brought some local citizens to suggest, seriously, that a pit be dug beside it so that the engine could be toppled in and buried to eliminate the problem. The lagging was eventually removed at high cost by a hacker, who torched off numerous items that were in his way. About that time, a local group formed to maintain the engine, and some cosmetic work was done. Is this group still around? Bob: When I saw your subject line, I thought you were bringing up the subject of Grand Trunk Western 4-6-2 #5030, long in a park in Jackson, Michigan. The 5030 was the only one of its class to be preserved. Instead it's just some BIG old Santa Fe 2-10-4 you wanted to talk about. DARN! These are some of the most impressive locomotives I've ever seen. The earth must have shook to the core when these rolled by. I'd love to see one restored someday. |

It's always good to see a park locomotive getting attention and being shown some much-needed TLC. Well done, Old Santa Fe Association! Regarding the article, it looks like there was a slight mistake made. The locomotive's weight on the drivers is 380,300 lbs., but the locomotive itself weighs considerably more than that. The weight of the locomotive (not including the tender) is 538,000 lbs., and the weight of the locomotive & loaded tender is 1,002,700 lbs. https://www.steamlocomotive.com/locobas ... lroad=atsf |

PRR leased some ATSF 5011's in 1956 for Columbus-Sandusky service and they ran along with PRR's J-1 2-10-4"s (built to a C&O design) PRR found out the 5011's with 74 inch drivers could outpull PRR's J-1's with 70 inch drivers. Phil Mulligan |
