The White Pass & Yukon Route will work on more steam engines at the future. One of the old Baldwin #66, removed from the river was turned on their frame. Image can be seen at

And don't forget that they bring back #69 as full operation engine to Skagway. Can't wait to see it. Maybe next or in two years from now.

The locomotive is WP&YR 61 which was purchased by Steven Butler of Mid-West Locomotive & Machine Works of North Lake, WI.It was dumped in the river in 1949 near the cemetery at mile post 2.5 and was removed from the river in 1988 by it former owner.Plans are to mve the locomotive to WI for restoration with in the next year.

Was the tender for this engine dumped also? I believe someone uncovered some dumped tenders some years ago. Was one of them from the 61?

Two tender tanks were removed from the river,I believe at the same time as the 60 & 61.One is a slope back that was reported to be from the WP&YR 56. The other could be off of one of the 4-6-0's or the 61. There is a similar tender in the river bank near the shop. Near the cemetery there is a slightly larger tender exposed in the river bank, the remains of number 68 or 69 are visible on its back.All of the tenders are good for patterns and measurements at the most.

What are the long term restoration plans for this engine? I'm guessing cosmetic-only, which in itself would be a big job. Also, concerning the tenders, I think No. 69 had more than one tender in its life, possibly ending up with one of the original tenders that came with No. 70 or 71(they received tenders from USATC Mikados), so the buried tender could be a previous one from 69. Additionally, I've heard that one of the found tenders had "D&RG" on the side. As the K-28s were shipped back south for scrapping, I'm guessing the tender might be from rotary plow ON?
