Photo from 1946, of what I think was called Hogtown. This was a second DL&W turntable at Scranton. I recall seeing the ring when the Steamtown site was just being developed, but I think it lies under asphalt now.

Yes thats what we commonly called hogtown, infact there is still a track called the hogtown lead in the NPS/DL timetable. It was usually where the pushers and the mine run engines were kept.

The hogtown area was the site of one of the first roundhouses in the US, 1854 I believe, an enclosed structure similar to the B&O Museum, long gone of course. If you ever see the George Innes painting called "The Lackawanna Valley" in the National Gallery, this is the location, of course the view in the painting is from the other side of the valley.

The turntable pit was "re-discovered" when the current park utilities layout was put together in the early '90's. Some of it was destroyed to make way for sewer pipes and the like, but much of it is still under the grass and dirt, no part was paved over if you can believe it.
