PostPosted: Sun Jun 22, 2003 7:17 pm

Does anyone know of a quick solution for cleaning leaked (caked-on) battery acid from the inside of a metal Starlite railroad lantern casing? One of my batteries burst inside and made a mess. I'd like to reuse the lantern and get it cleaned up. If anyone has suggestions, I'm all ears. Thanks.

Kip

The first thing is to remove as much of the material you can with a small parts brush. Then use a solution of baking soada and water to nutralize the acid and again use a brass or nylon parts brush to scrub the interior of the lamp. Rinse and let air dry and then repeat if you still see signs of acid reacting with the metal. The only other method is to take the lantern apart and use glass beads and blast the inside carefully with the air pressure set at no higher than 20psi. Then spray a clear coat inside to prevent moisture from causing rust.
