Is any of Fred Steck's equipment still assembled in Michigan? Did he rebuild the CNR 2-6-0 #91 now at the Middletown and Hummelstown in PA? |

I don't know where the 2-6-0 and 0-4-0T are, but I recently saw the very interesting AT&SF 60-foot 4-axle heavyweight superintendent's business car being serviced at the Bluewater Chapter, NRHS, car shop in Saginaw. After sale by Fred Steck, this car was stuffed and mounted at a bank branch in the Traverse City PM depot for some years, and is now in service on the Huron and Eastern. It still looked pretty good and complete and unmodified (unlike the rusty C&O 52-seat coach that may still be derelict at Traverse City). I believe nothing remains at Reese, Michigan, where Steck had a spur into his farm. Aarne Frobom |

Over the years Fred Steck owned (or at least had on his property) several steam locomotives starting with ex-Florida & Alabama RR 18, a Baldwin 2-6-2 logging engine. Around 1970 he sold 18 to Stuart Kline for use at the Dry Gulch Junction (tourist) RR in VA. 18 later traveled to MT, IA, and is now in NE being overhauled at the Fremont & Elkhorn Valley RR. Around the time he sold 18, he acquired ex-Canadian National 2-6-0 91 from Ontario. 91 was sold to the Middletown & Hummelstown RR during the mid 1980's and was operated there briefly during the summer of '88. We fans of these trim CNR Moguls await its return to steam this year. During the early/mid 1970's, Steck also owned (and operated for the public at his REESE CENTRAL railroad museum) ex-Kelly Island Lime 0-4-0T 11. Prior to coming to Reese, this 0-4-0T was at the Cadillac & Lake City RR at Traverse City, MI. Jerry Jacobson (yes, that Jerry Jacobson) bought it around 1980 and it was used briefly on the second failed attempt to run tourist trains at Hiltons, VA along the SOU Bristol line. Later 11 traveled to SD, first to the Deadwood Central RR and presently to the Prairie Village RR at Madison. There also is/was an ex-Canadian National 4-6-0 at Reese, but I believe this locomotive is/was owned by someone else. I don't know if the 4-6-0 is still there. Regards, Jim Robinson |

I believe you are referring to not Fred Steck's, but Bob Bennatt's CN 4-6-0, the #1521, a near copy of OC #1551. Bob had it on his farm in Croswell, along with a private car (forget the history on that) and an ex- GTW 77000-series caboose. Bob sold the 4-6-0 in the early '80's I believe, to a place in Nova Scotia I believe. TJG Port Huron Museum tjgaffney@phmuseum.org |

Idon't know what happened to it.btw I am the person who told fred about the 91 being for sale. Also don't forget he bought and sold the cnr 060 to North Conway Senic rr. Fred got that one from some suger co . in ont. staybolt2@netscape.net |
