What a damned crying shame! We in St. Louis know all about the insurance blues. Chalk up another one. I wonder who will be next? I hate to be a crepe hanger, but there doesn't seem to be an end to this mess. Condolences guys.

Another "old news item" worth reading:

"Steam Train trips cancelled: Buffalo to Corning steam-train excursions planned for May 31 and June 1,7,and 8 have been cancelled by the Western New York Historical Society due to an ongoing liability insurance crisis"..... to which someone...(me, in fact), wrote a published letter to the editor of Forbes magazine: One more piece of Americana threatened? Neither the diesel locomotive, government nor merger has killed the steam locomotive - will the lawsuit finally do it? And what next? The circus? Baseball? Church picnics???"

And as you all nod in approval, one more fact. The date of the letter and FORBES issue was July 28, 1986.

Hang in there everybody. Rough weather, but we HAVE actually been there before, and not that long ago. It probably has more to do with investment and capital gains income this time than the inherent nature of the business itself. What did your 401K look like last year? What we NEED is an economic recovery, though some lawsuit reform wouldn't hurt either....

I'm hoping, really hoping, that Jerry J. and some mean exactly what they said publicly. They're not running, right now....but they're not selling anything either.

If folks want to have an immediate and firsthand positive impact on the lawsuits that drive up liability insurance premiums, there's one simple thing they can do... serve on jury duty when they get called, and just say NO to awarding money on frivolous or questionable suits.

Lawyers count on juries to award big bucks, and if every day people start saying no, thereby cutting off the faucet of easy money, some lawyers might start to think twice. Companies, if they think they might land a sympathetic jury, might also be less inclined to settle out of court, and decide to take it to trial...

It might be time to start writing your state officials, as well as on the national level. I would suggest something along the line of operating national "Tresures" that enhance history and enjoyment for those who witness such grand locomotives that helped make this country as great as it is today...blah, blah, blah!!! Maybe some form of grandfathering can be used on vintage equipment. Anything is better than nothing.

Each and every one of our operations and museums has an effect on the surrounding area ... there are chambers of commerce, visitors bureaus, businessmens associations etc. that are directly and indirectly affected by a loss of visitors to your area. Get them on the bandwagon also.
