NZR 4-8-2 class J 1234, with a vintage looking consist, taken fairly recently. Nice engine.

1234 is a J class built by the North British Locomotive Company in 1939. She was bought out of service in 1971 and has been kept in operation ever since. The pic was actually taken in October 1992. There were a total of 91 locomotives in this series which included 2 subclasses. The lst 35 were built here in NZ.A total of 10 have survived and 5 are operational with a sixth nearing completion.As noted on a previous posting an American engineman would be immediately at home on one of these with its right hand drive, bar frame, Baker valve gear, Franklin power reverse gear, Franklin Butterfly firedoors, A6ET brake, Sellars live steam injector, Pyle National K2 generator and lighting, Westinghouse cross compound air compressor, Detroit hydostatic lubricator and the whistle being similar to the short Nathan 5 chime. They are good and reliable engines.
